Dear colleagues and ophthalmology enthusiasts,
It is with great enthusiasm that I announce an important milestone in Italian ocular surgery. On the first day of spring 2025, at the Aurora Banchette Clinic in Ivrea, the first surgery in Italy was performed with the implantation of the Panoptix toric lens on the Clareon platform.
This innovative surgery was carried out by Dr. Alberto Bellone, a renowned ophthalmologist with over twenty-five years of experience in ocular surgery. Dr. Bellone is no stranger to ophthalmological milestones. His career is filled with innovations, including the first implantation of the ICL Evo Plus V5 lens in Italy in 2016, and the Visian ICL Viva lens for presbyopia correction in 2022.
Graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Turin in 1996 and specializing in Ophthalmology in 2000 with top honors, Dr. Bellone is today one of the most prominent refractive and cataract surgeons in Italy.
The surgery was performed using state-of-the-art equipment:
- The Panoptix toric lens on the Clareon platform is an advanced artificial lens that combines astigmatism correction with superior multifocal vision quality.
- The Clareon platform represents the latest evolution in IOL technology, with materials that ensure greater transparency and long-term stability.
- The Leica Proveo 8 microscope provides an extremely detailed view of the surgical field, essential for micro-surgical precision.
- The Eva Dorc phacoemulsifier is cutting-edge technology for the fragmentation and aspiration of the opacified lens.
- The Johnson & Johnson Catalyst Femto Laser allows for cataract surgery guided with micrometric precision.
The benefits for patients from this procedure represent a significant advancement in cataract surgery:
- Simultaneous correction of cataracts, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
- Independence from glasses for most daily activities.
- Improved night vision quality.
- Faster recovery due to less invasiveness.
- Greater stability and long-term durability of the implant.
Innovations like this mark continuous progress in ophthalmic surgery, with Italy maintaining a position of excellence. Dr. Bellone and his team continue to push the boundaries of ocular surgery with an approach that combines surgical expertise and cutting-edge technology.
The Aurora Clinic in Banchette Ivrea is confirmed as a leading center for the most innovative ophthalmic procedures, offering patients from Piedmont and beyond access to the latest advancements in ophthalmology.
This first surgery with the Panoptix Toric lens on the Clareon platform represents just the beginning of a new era in visual defect correction, as already demonstrated in the evolution of ICL lenses, which have been in use since their first implantation in Europe in 1993.
Thank you for your attention, and I invite you to follow the upcoming developments in this exciting field of medicine.
